Five people are dead after a 16-year-old gunman attacked Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The teenager killed three young children and a teacher before an armed member of the community chased him into the school and shot him dead.
Two more people were wounded. Police say the death toll could have been much higher if not for the people who stepped in to stop the attack.
How the Attack Unfolded
The first report of an active shooter came at about 12:59 p.m. local time. Police say the teenager first fired at a truck parked in front of the school. He then forced his way into the building by shooting through locked doors.
Inside, he opened fire in a special needs classroom. Officers arrived about three minutes after the first call.
The Victims
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed the victims’ details at a news conference on Friday. Those killed were:
- Megan Lambert, 25, a teacher. Her family said she was working her “dream job” at Silver Rail.
- Rhoam Summer, 5, a student.
- An 8-year-old boy, whose name was withheld at his family’s request.
- An 11-year-old boy, whose name was also withheld at his family’s request.
A 7-year-old girl was critically injured and is now in serious but stable condition. Teacher Becky Drury, 54, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Heroes Who Stopped the Gunman
Two people are being credited with preventing more deaths. A teacher tackled the gunman during the attack and tried to wrestle the gun away from him. That teacher was not hurt.
An armed community member, reported to be a father, pursued the teenager into the building and shot him dead. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the person for having heroically intervened to prevent further loss of life.
Who Was the Shooter?
Police say the gunman was a 16-year-old who had previously attended Silver Rail as a special needs student. He was not currently enrolled in the school district. Authorities have not released his name.
The motive is still under investigation.
Community in Mourning
Hundreds of people gathered for a candlelight vigil at Drake Park in Bend on Thursday evening. Messages including “never again” were written in chalk on the ground.
The attack is the latest in a long series of deadly school shootings in the United States, and it is likely to renew the national debate over gun laws and school safety.
For Nigerians and other parents in the diaspora: many US school districts offer parents information about their emergency and lockdown procedures. It is worth asking your child’s school how it keeps students safe and how it will contact you in an emergency.
