The Nigerian film industry is in mourning after veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru died at the age of 57 following a brief illness.

According to a family source quoted by Channels Television, Duru passed away at about 10pm on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the National Hospital in Abuja. His family confirmed the death in a statement posted on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23. They thanked fans and well-wishers for their support and did not give further details about the illness.

A career that spanned more than three decades

Duru was one of the most familiar faces of Nollywood’s golden era. He began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko, at a time when the Nigerian home-video industry was still taking shape.

His breakthrough came in 1995, when he played Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s classic crime drama Rattlesnake. The role made him a household name across Nigeria and the wider African diaspora, and the film is still regarded as one of the defining works of early Nollywood.

He went on to appear in many other productions, including Blood Money (1997), One Chance, Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020). Colleagues often praised his versatility and his creative interpretation of roles, whether he was playing a hardened criminal, a romantic lead or a troubled family man.

Leadership and recognition

Beyond the screen, Duru played an active role in the affairs of the industry. In 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), helping to steer the guild during a period of transition.

His work earned him several honours. He received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007, and in 2020 he won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa, showing that his talent remained strong well into the later stages of his career.

Personal tragedy and health rumours

Duru’s final years were marked by personal grief. In August 2024, he lost his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, and announced the death in an emotional Instagram post in which he described the boy as his “champ” and a “lion” who fought bravely.

Earlier in 2026, Duru publicly dismissed social media reports that he was battling a life-threatening illness. In a video posted in June, he described the circulating footage and health claims as false. His sudden death has therefore come as a shock to many fans and colleagues.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Tributes pour in from colleagues

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry since the news broke. Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo described Duru as “a consummate actor” who “has left the stage”, calling him one of the most flexible and prolific performers Nigeria has produced.

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Yakubu, also paid tribute, describing Duru’s passing as the loss of another great figure in the film industry.

Duru’s death comes only about five weeks after the death of another Nollywood icon, Olu Jacobs, deepening what has been a painful period for the industry. Many fans have taken to social media to share clips of their favourite scenes, with Rattlesnake once again trending as a new generation discovers his work.

A lasting legacy

For many Nigerians at home and abroad, Francis Duru’s films were part of growing up. His performances helped build Nollywood into the global industry it is today, and his name will always be linked with the early classics that put Nigerian storytelling on the map.

Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.

Flashinfong extends its condolences to the Duru family, his colleagues and fans around the world.
