Professor Alex Odaibo Becomes First Professor Emeritus of Zoology at University of Ibadan – A Historic Achievement
The University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier and oldest university, has made history by conferring the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus on Professor Alexander B. Odaibo of the Department of Zoology — making him the first Professor Emeritus ever produced by that department in the university’s long and distinguished history. Professor Alexander B. Odaibo has spent more than four decades at the University of Ibadan as a researcher, teacher, and academic leader. As Head of the Parasitology Research Unit in the Department of Zoology, he built one of the most productive and internationally recognised parasitology research programmes in West Africa. His research has focused primarily on two of the most significant parasitic diseases affecting Nigerian communities – malaria, which remains one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, and schistosomiasis, a waterborne parasitic disease caused by flatworms that affects millions of people in Nigeria’s rural and semi-rural communities, with particular impact on children and women.
rofessor Odaibo’s work on urogenital schistosomiasis, intestinal schistosomiasis, and female genital schistosomiasis in endemic communities in Nigeria has generated over 2,000 scholarly citations – a figure that places him among the most-cited parasitologists in Nigeria and reflects the extent to which his research has informed the work of scientists, public health professionals, and policymakers around the world. His research into snail hosts of trematode parasites – the intermediate hosts through which schistosomiasis is transmitted to humans — has been particularly significant, providing the foundational scientific understanding needed to design effective community-level control programmes in affected areas of Oyo, Osun, and other states in southwestern Nigeria. He is a Professor of Parasitology and Medical Malacology and has been affiliated with the University of Ibadan since February 1984 – a tenure of over four decades that represents a life devoted to the advancement of science in Nigeria.
The title of Professor Emeritus is among the highest honours a university can confer on an academic. It is not given on the basis of seniority alone, nor is it automatic upon retirement. It is awarded selectively to scholars whose contributions to their field have been of exceptional distinction – whose research, teaching, and mentorship have made a lasting difference not just to their institution but to their discipline as a whole. Notable figures in the university’s history of Emeritus appointments include Victor Adenuga Oyenuga, who became the first Professor Emeritus of the University of Ibadan in 1979, and Wole Soyinka — Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Literature.
The appointment of Professor Odaibo to the rank of Professor Emeritus is a recognition not just of a body of published research – substantial and internationally significant as that is – but of a career of consistent, sustained engagement with some of the most pressing public health challenges facing Nigerian and West African communities. Schistosomiasis and malaria are not diseases of wealthy populations with access to quality healthcare. They are diseases of rural communities, of children who swim in infected water sources, of women exposed to parasites in the course of daily domestic activities.
