Nigerian gospel singer, trumpeter and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has crossed one billion total views on YouTube, a milestone that reportedly makes him the first African gospel artist to reach the mark.

According to data from YouTube analytics trackers Social Blade and ReachRanking, cited by Pulse Nigeria, his main channel had recorded about 1.014 billion views as of Sunday, November 1, 2026. The channel, created in March 2011, has about 5.24 million subscribers.

The “first African gospel artist” label comes from media reports based on analytics data rather than an official announcement by YouTube.

Songs that built the numbers

Bassey’s catalogue of worship songs has drawn huge audiences in Nigeria, across Africa and in the diaspora. Among his best-known tracks are “Imela”, “Onise Iyanu”, “Olowogbogboro” and “You Are God”, which have become staples in churches and at worship gatherings around the world.

Since his debut album Elohim in 2008, he has released a steady run of projects, including This God Is Too Good (2016), Revival Flames (2017), Names of God (2022) and Bless the Lord (2024).

The Hallelujah Challenge effect

Much of his online growth is tied to the Hallelujah Challenge, the midnight worship and prayer programme he started in June 2017. It began as a simple Instagram Live session from his living room and grew within weeks to tens of thousands of daily participants, drawing in celebrities such as Tiwa Savage, D’banj and Don Jazzy.

The programme has since become a regular fixture, with sessions starting at 11:59 p.m. and streamed on YouTube and social media. ReachRanking data shows recent sessions drawing millions of views. The opening session of the latest edition passed four million views, while the October 2026 grand finale, the Hallelujah Festival, also attracted millions.

Bassey has repeatedly said the challenge is about worship and devotion, not money, despite fans suggesting he could earn more from it.

A big moment for African gospel

Born in Lagos on August 27, 1981, with roots in Akwa Ibom State, Bassey began his music journey playing the trumpet in church. He studied international relations and politics at the University of Lagos and later studied in London. He is also a pastor at The Oasis Lagos, the youth church of RCCG Kings Court in Victoria Island.

His milestone puts gospel music alongside the Afrobeats stars who have dominated Nigeria’s global streaming success. Burna Boy became the first Nigerian artist to pass one billion YouTube views in 2021.

For many fans, Bassey’s achievement shows that faith-based music from Africa can reach a worldwide audience on the same scale as mainstream pop, and that digital platforms are taking Nigerian worship far beyond church walls.
