Former Delta State Governor Dr Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan has died. He was 71.
Uduaghan died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, in a hospital in Abuja after an illness, three days before his 72nd birthday. His family confirmed the death in a statement signed by his son, Toju Anire Uduaghan, calling it “an immeasurable loss to our family, the people of Delta State, and Nigeria at large.”
The family did not give a cause of death. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Tinubu: “A public servant devoted to Delta’s development”
President Bola Tinubu described Uduaghan’s death as a serious loss to Delta State and to Nigeria. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President said:
“Dr Uduaghan was a public servant whose leadership was devoted to Delta’s development and service to our nation. May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn him.”
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, speaking through his press secretary Festus Ahon, called Uduaghan a “detribalised leader” whose work on infrastructure and development “would not be forgotten.” He sent condolences to Uduaghan’s wife, Roli, their children, the Itsekiri nation and the people of Delta State.
From doctor to governor
A medical doctor by training, Uduaghan began his career in 1983 as a medical officer at the Delta Steel Company. He rose steadily in public service:
- 1999–2003: Commissioner for Health, Delta State
- 2003–2007: Secretary to the State Government
- 2007–2015: Governor of Delta State, succeeding James Ibori
A dramatic first term
His time as governor began with a legal battle. In November 2010, a court nullified his 2007 election and ordered a rerun. Speaker Sam Obi served as acting governor until Uduaghan won the rerun in early 2011. He then won a fresh mandate in the April 2011 general elections and completed his second term in 2015.
As governor he championed what he called the “Delta Beyond Oil” agenda, aiming to diversify the state’s economy through agriculture, tourism and industry. He was also known for infrastructure projects across the state.
Political journey after office
After leaving office, Uduaghan moved between Nigeria’s major parties. He left the PDP for the APC in 2018, returned to the PDP in 2020, and rejoined the APC in May 2025.
In June 2026, false reports of his death spread on social media. The Delta State Government said at the time that his daughter, Orode, had confirmed he was alive, and his media aide said he had been unwell but was recovering.
Legacy
To supporters, Uduaghan will be remembered as a calm, technocratic leader who brought a doctor’s discipline to government and worked to keep the peace in a politically complex state. To his Itsekiri people and the wider Delta community, his passing marks the end of an era.
Flashinfong extends its condolences to the Uduaghan family and the people of Delta State. May his soul rest in peace.
