Enugu Air, the airline owned by the Enugu State Government, says it has secured approval to operate flights between Lagos and London Gatwick, a major step for a carrier that only began commercial operations last year. The airline announced the development in a statement this week, saying the route will be run through a strategic partnership with Omni-Blu Aviation (OBA), which will serve as the designated operator.
What the Airline Announced
According to Nairametrics, ThisDay, Legit.ng and Daily Nigerian, which carried the News Agency of Nigeria report, the airline said it was delighted to announce approval of the Lagos–London Gatwick route through its partnership with OBA. The statement credited Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for his support of the airline’s growth.
ThisDay reported that bookings are open through the airline’s online portal and that flights will begin in December 2026. However, Nairametrics and Legit.ng said the airline had not yet published a schedule, a firm start date or fares, and would announce those details through its official channels. The airline also did not say which aircraft would be used or how many weekly flights it plans to operate.
None of the reports named the regulator that granted the approval. International operators flying into the UK typically need clearance from both Nigerian and British aviation authorities, and Legit.ng noted that further operational requirements may still need to be met before the first flight.
From Domestic Start-Up to International Routes
Enugu Air launched commercial operations in July 2025 with a small fleet of Embraer jets, initially flying from Enugu to Lagos and Abuja. Nairametrics reported that it operated under an interim authorisation from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) at first, before receiving its full Air Operator Certificate (AOC) on 10 March 2026.
The carrier has been expanding quickly since then. ThisDay said it operated its first international flight, to Douala in Cameroon, on 23 September 2026. The London route would be by far its most ambitious move yet.
Competition on a Busy Route
Lagos–London is one of the busiest and most lucrative routes out of Africa, driven by the large Nigerian community in the UK, students, business travellers and families visiting relatives. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have long dominated the market.
Air Peace broke into the route in March 2024 with Lagos–Gatwick flights and added an Abuja–Heathrow service in October 2025, according to Nairametrics. Its entry was widely credited with putting downward pressure on fares, and many travellers will be hoping a second Nigerian carrier has a similar effect.
What It Means for Travellers and the Diaspora
For Nigerians in the UK, especially the large population with roots in the South-East, more competition could mean more choice and potentially cheaper tickets, particularly around the busy December travel season. Whether Enugu Air can win passengers will depend on its fares, reliability and the aircraft deployed on the long-haul route.
What Happens Next
Travellers should watch for the airline’s official confirmation of schedules, fares and the inaugural flight date. Until those details are published on Enugu Air’s official channels, passengers are advised to book only through the airline’s verified platforms.
