President Donald Trump has named Stephen Miller as his new White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles in the most significant staff shake-up since Republicans lost control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Trump announced the change in a post on Truth Social on Friday, 6 November, saying Miller will take up the role on Monday, 9 November 2026, according to NBC News and Newsweek.

What Trump Announced

In his post, Trump said he was pleased to announce that Miller, currently deputy chief of staff, would become chief of staff from Monday. He said Wiles “will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation,” though he gave no further details about her new role, Newsweek reported. Fox News described Miller as one of the president’s most trusted advisers.

Wiles confirmed the move on X, writing that Friday was her last day as White House chief of staff and describing the job as “the honor of a lifetime,” according to NBC. Fox News reported that a White House official called the transition amicable.

Who Is Stephen Miller?

Miller, 41, has been one of Trump’s closest and longest-serving aides. A former staffer to then-Senator Jeff Sessions, he joined Trump’s 2016 campaign as a speechwriter and served as a senior adviser during Trump’s first term. Since 2025 he has been White House deputy chief of staff with a wide portfolio, most closely associated with immigration, the Associated Press reported.

He is widely regarded as the architect of the administration’s mass deportation drive, including aggressive arrest targets and the deployment of federal immigration agents into American cities. That campaign has drawn strong criticism from Democrats, civil rights groups and some Republicans, especially after two Minneapolis residents were fatally shot by federal agents in January.

A Surprising Promotion After a Bruising Week

The appointment comes days after Democrats won control of Congress, with immigration enforcement, the war with Iran and cost-of-living concerns cited among the reasons for Republican losses. It also follows a Wall Street Journal report this week that Trump had told aides Miller “went too far” on deportations after First Lady Melania Trump complained that people she knew were being deported. Rather than sidelining Miller, Trump has now handed him the most powerful staff job in the White House.

Wiles, who ran Trump’s successful 2024 campaign, became the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff in January 2025. She disclosed a breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year and later said there was no evidence of the disease remaining, according to the AP.

What It Means for Immigrants, Including Nigerians

For immigrant communities in the United States, including Nigerians and other Africans, Miller’s elevation signals that a hardline approach to immigration is likely to remain at the centre of White House policy. Visa restrictions, travel bans and deportations affecting African nationals have been among the administration’s signature measures, and immigration lawyers will be watching closely for any new directives.

What Happens Next

Miller formally takes over on Monday. The White House has not yet said who will fill his current role as deputy chief of staff for policy. With Democrats taking control of Congress in January, Miller is expected to face intense scrutiny, including possible oversight hearings into immigration enforcement.
