The FG N50,000 monthly cash assistance programme is designed to provide direct financial relief to vulnerable households across Nigeria as the Federal Government seeks to cushion the impact of rising food prices, inflation and the increasing cost of essential goods.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, announced the initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.
According to the minister, the intervention is a presidential initiative intended to provide regular financial support to Nigerians facing economic difficulties, particularly households struggling to meet basic needs.
Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly. The payment is expected to help households manage essential expenses, including food and other basic requirements, amid continuing pressure on household budgets.
Doro described the initiative as part of the government’s broader social protection efforts, aimed at improving the financial resilience of vulnerable Nigerians.
How the FG N50,000 monthly cash assistance will be paid
The Federal Government plans to work with licensed digital financial service providers to distribute the monthly payments to selected beneficiaries.
Doro explained that the service providers would contact beneficiaries through text messages to obtain their consent before transferring funds into their designated bank accounts or mobile wallets.
This arrangement is intended to facilitate the payment process through recognised financial service channels. Beneficiaries are therefore expected to pay attention to official communications concerning the intervention and verify any message they receive before responding.
The minister also disclosed that the government would periodically review the N50,000 monthly payment to reflect changes in the cost of living. Where an adjustment becomes necessary, beneficiaries would be notified before the revised amount takes effect.
However, the announcement did not state when the first complete round of payments would be concluded or provide a detailed timetable for subsequent disbursements.
No application fee required for NERSI beneficiaries
The minister stressed that Nigerians would not need to submit applications, pay registration fees or engage agents to access the intervention.
He warned that fraudsters might exploit public interest in the FG N50,000 monthly cash assistance programme by demanding money from people or promising to secure their inclusion on the beneficiary list.
Doro advised Nigerians to be cautious of individuals and organisations requesting payment in exchange for enrolment or guaranteed access to the scheme.
Anyone who receives a suspicious message or is approached by someone demanding money was advised to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222 for clarification.
The minister also cautioned beneficiaries against disclosing sensitive banking information to unauthorised persons. These include personal identification numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), which should not be shared with strangers or individuals claiming to represent the programme.
Nigerians should independently verify requests for personal or financial information rather than relying solely on messages or calls from unknown contacts.
NERSI to complement existing government interventions
Doro explained that the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention would complement existing Federal Government social protection programmes rather than replace them.
According to him, the initiative is intended to strengthen the ability of vulnerable households to withstand economic pressures while contributing to wider efforts to promote economic stability.
He linked the programme to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and assured Nigerians that its implementation would be guided by transparency, accountability and respect for beneficiaries.
The intervention comes amid continuing concerns about the effect of inflation and rising living expenses on low-income households. For families with limited or irregular earnings, increases in the prices of food and other essential commodities can make it increasingly difficult to meet everyday needs.
A regular cash transfer, if effectively implemented and delivered to the intended recipients, could provide some financial relief to households facing these pressures.
What Nigerians should know about N50,000 cash payments
Although the government has announced the monthly payment and outlined the proposed disbursement arrangements, some important details remain unclear.
The ministry has not provided a comprehensive breakdown of the eligibility requirements, the specific criteria for selecting beneficiaries or the total number of households expected to receive support.
It has also not announced a precise timeline for the completion of the first batch of payments.
These outstanding details are important because they will help Nigerians understand who qualifies, how beneficiaries will be identified and when selected households can expect to receive the assistance.
For now, the ministry’s announcement indicates that beneficiaries will be contacted through participating financial service providers and will not be required to pay registration or processing fees.
The Federal Government is expected to provide further information on the selection process and implementation arrangements as the programme progresses. Until then, Nigerians are advised to rely on official communications and avoid anyone demanding payment to facilitate access to the intervention.
