Good Morning America co-anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos have been honoured with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The pair, who have presented the ABC morning show together since 2009, received their stars in a rare double ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles on Thursday, November 5.
According to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which runs the Walk of Fame, their stars are the 2,862nd and 2,863rd on the famous pavement, both in the television category. They sit close to the historic El Capitan Theatre.
A Star-Studded Ceremony
The event was hosted by their GMA colleague Michael Strahan, the former NFL star who received his own star in 2023. Guest speakers included actor Michael J. Fox, actress Niecy Nash-Betts and Debra OConnell, chairman of Disney Entertainment Television, ABC7 reported.
Fox paid tribute to Stephanopoulos, praising how seriously he takes his work, and drew laughs by jokingly nominating him for the 2028 presidential election. Nash-Betts spoke about what Roberts’ star would mean to young people, saying a Black girl walking down the street would now see Roberts’ name in the sidewalk.
Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez described the occasion as a special “double star” honour for the long-running duo.
“We Could Not Be More Different”
In her speech, Roberts thanked Disney for supporting her career and encouraging her to step outside her comfort zone. She noted that she and Stephanopoulos had become the longest-running duo in the history of American morning television. “If you look at our resumes, we could not be more different,” she said, as reported by Yahoo Entertainment. She closed with an emotional tribute to her wife, Amber Laign.
Stephanopoulos said it had been a great gift to cover major stories and greet the country every morning. He also joked about sitting between two sporting greats every day, pointing out that Roberts is in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and Strahan in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Two Remarkable Careers
Roberts has spent more than 30 years in journalism, covering events from Hurricane Katrina to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. A former college basketball standout, she started out in sports broadcasting before becoming one of America’s most familiar morning TV faces. She has spoken openly about her battles with breast cancer and the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome, and has won a Peabody Award and several Daytime Emmys.
Stephanopoulos joined ABC News in 1997 as an analyst on the Sunday programme This Week, which he now anchors, after serving as a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton. He has won four Emmy Awards and runs his own production company.
What Happens Next
The new stars will now join more than 2,800 others on Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, where millions of tourists walk every year. Roberts and Stephanopoulos are expected to continue presenting Good Morning America together, a partnership that has now lasted more than 17 years.
