British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault by a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London. On Thursday, November 5, jurors convicted the 51-year-old of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, committed against women in the 2000s. He was cleared of three other charges.
Judge Joel Bennathan remanded Brand in custody and told him to expect a significant prison term when he is sentenced on Monday, November 9, according to Al Jazeera and Yahoo News.
The Verdicts
Brand had pleaded not guilty to seven charges: three of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault, relating to the period between 1999 and 2009. After a four-week trial, the jury found him guilty of rape and of all three sexual assault charges. He was found not guilty of two rape charges and the attempted indecent assault charge.
The rape conviction relates to an attack on a woman at Brand’s London home in 2009. The sexual assault convictions involve women who worked in television and radio, with offences dating from 2004 to 2009. Under UK law, all the women who made complaints have lifelong anonymity.
Throughout the trial, Brand denied wrongdoing. He told the court the encounters were consensual or that the allegations had been made up, and said he had never forced anyone to do anything against their will.
Police and Prosecutors React
The Crown Prosecution Service said the women came forward independently after a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary, made with The Times and The Sunday Times, aired in September 2023. Senior Crown Prosecutor David Roberts described Brand as predatory, saying he used his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes, Mediaweek reported.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said Brand had used his influence and fame to exploit women, and praised the courage of those who gave evidence.
Channel 4 said it commended the bravery of the prosecution witnesses, while the BBC repeated its apology following a 2025 review of how it handled complaints about Brand’s behaviour when he worked there.
Family Shocked by Verdict
Brand’s wife, Laura, was in court for the verdict. His father, Ron Brand, told the BBC he was shocked by the outcome and described it as devastating, according to Yahoo News. No statement from Brand or his legal team had been reported by Thursday evening.
From Comedy Star to Convicted Offender
Brand rose to fame as a stand-up comedian and television presenter in Britain in the 2000s before moving to Hollywood, where he starred in films including Get Him to the Greek and Arthur. He was briefly married to American pop star Katy Perry, from 2010 to 2012.
In recent years, he had reinvented himself as an online commentator with a large following. The allegations against him first became public in 2023, leading to a police investigation and, eventually, the criminal charges.
What Happens Next
Brand will remain in custody until his sentencing hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Monday. The Metropolitan Police has also said that files on further rape allegations from two more women have been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service. Brand has not been charged in connection with those claims.
