The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, is battling for his life after being shot multiple times in what officials are calling an attempted assassination. Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák stated that doctors performed surgery late into the evening, and Fico’s condition remains extremely serious.
“We’ve had a very tragic day, with the prime minister fighting for his life,” Kaliňák said, as reported locally.
Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba provided an update to the BBC, stating that Fico is currently not in a life-threatening situation.
Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok informed reporters that the gunman shot Fico five times. A suspect has been apprehended, but the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Šutaj Eštok mentioned that initial investigations indicate a clear political motivation behind the attack.
