ODUNA Holds Historic Inaugural National Convention in Dallas

MESQUITE, Texas – July 12, 2026 – The Obowo Development Union North America (ODUNA) has successfully concluded its Historic Inaugural National Convention, bringing together Obowo sons and daughters from across the United States for a landmark weekend of leadership, unity, and cultural celebration. Held from July 3-4, 2026, at the Igbo Center in Mesquite, Texas, the convention marked the official launch of ODUNA’s national leadership structure, the beginning of its constitutional framework, and the announcement of Houston as the host city for the 2027 National Convention.

For many attendees, the weekend represented far more than a gathering of friends and family. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for Obowians in North America-one built on unity, service, and a shared commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Obowo people.

The convention officially commenced on Friday, July 3, with the Inauguration and General Meeting, where delegates from various chapters unanimously ratified an Interim National Council by voice vote to lead the organization for the next year.

The newly ratified leadership is headed by Ike Igbokwe (Agunechemba) as Interim National Chairman, with Christian Opara serving as Interim National Secretary.

Delegates also approved members to serve on various National Working Committees, including Engr. Atolegwu of Arizona, Ebere Anyanwu of Baltimore, Maryland, Olivia Diopara, while Attorney Henry Nnabugwu was confirmed as the organization’s National Legal Counsel.

In his acceptance speech, Chairman Ike Igbokwe (Agunechemba) thanked delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead the organization with transparency, inclusiveness, and dedication.

He promised to take ODUNA to the next level, calling on members across North America to remain united in building an organization that future generations of Obowians would be proud to inherit.

“Our strength lies in our unity,” he said, encouraging members to work together in advancing the organization’s shared vision.

One of his first official actions was the appointment of Attorney Henry Nnabugwu as Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee.

Attorney Nnabugwu was given the mandate to appoint additional members of the committee and lead the drafting of ODUNA’s first constitution, which will establish the organization’s governance framework and be presented for consideration at the next national convention.

With this responsibility, the Interim National Council begins the important task of laying a solid institutional foundation for the organization’s future.

On Saturday, July 4, the focus shifted from organizational business to celebration as members gathered for an elegant Gala Night that showcased the warmth, unity, and vibrant culture of the Obowo people.

Dressed in colorful traditional attire, members reconnected with old friends, welcomed new acquaintances, and celebrated their shared heritage through music, fellowship, and lively conversations. The evening reflected the spirit of community that inspired the formation of ODUNA and reinforced its commitment to preserving Obowo culture for future generations.

Another highlight of the convention came with the announcement that Houston, Texas, will host the 2027 ODUNA National Convention.

Accepting the honor on behalf of the Houston, the chapter president Mr. Christian Opara thanked delegates for the confidence placed in Houston and pledged to deliver an even greater experience for all Obowians when the organization reconvenes in 2027.

The announcement was greeted with enthusiastic applause as members looked forward to building on the success of the inaugural convention.

As delegates departed Mesquite, they left with more than memories. They returned home with renewed friendships, a stronger sense of purpose, and a shared commitment to building an organization that will continue to unite Obowians across North America while preserving the culture and traditions of their homeland.

The successful inaugural convention laid a strong foundation for ODUNA’s future and demonstrated what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision.

For an organization just beginning its national journey, the message from Mesquite was clear: the future of ODUNA is bright, and the journey has only just begun.
