Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi finally got off the mark in the Premier League for Coventry City on Saturday, scoring the second goal in a 3-1 home win over Sunderland that lifted Frank Lampard’s side out of the relegation zone. The victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena left Sunderland rooted to the bottom of the table and gave Coventry only their third league win of the season.

For Awoniyi, who joined the Sky Blues from Nottingham Forest in August, the goal was a timely reward after a slow start at his new club, and a welcome moment for a player whose last 18 months have been defined by a frightening injury and a long road back.

How the Game Was Won

Coventry took the lead in the 17th minute when Japanese winger Tatsuhiro Sakamoto finished from the edge of the box for his first Premier League goal, according to Sky Sports.

Awoniyi doubled the advantage in the 37th minute. The 29-year-old pressed Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien, won the ball, drove into the penalty area and finished to make it 2-0. Complete Sports reported that it was his second goal of the season in all competitions but his first in the league since the move.

Jack Rudoni put the game beyond Sunderland seven minutes after the break, his shot from the edge of the area taking a deflection off defender Omar Alderete and beating goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Sunderland pulled one back through an Enzo Le Fée penalty in the 67th minute after Ethan Pinnock handled in the box, their first Premier League goal since September 20. Alderete was later sent off for a second yellow card deep into stoppage time.

Awoniyi was substituted in the 72nd minute, with the result already largely secure.

A Big Win in the Relegation Fight

The match had been billed as a relegation six-pointer, and Coventry made it count. The result moved the newly promoted side out of the bottom three and above Manchester United, who lost 2-0 at Chelsea earlier in the day. Sunderland remain bottom and are struggling badly for goals.

Lampard was pleased with his team’s attitude, telling reporters he loved the way his side approached the game. Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris pointed to consistency as his team’s main problem, warning that the Premier League is “relentless”.

Coventry’s season had started poorly, with defeats in their first four league matches, before back-to-back wins in September and October began to turn the tide. Saturday’s victory strengthens the belief that they can survive in the top flight.

Awoniyi’s Road Back

Awoniyi’s goal carries extra meaning given what he has been through. In May 2025, while playing for Nottingham Forest against Leicester City, he suffered a serious abdominal injury after colliding with a goalpost. He needed urgent surgery and was placed in an induced coma for a short period before recovering.

He returned to action in October 2025 and scored his first Premier League goal after the injury in January 2026, away at Brentford. After four years at Forest, where he became a fan favourite and scored the goal against Arsenal that sealed their survival in 2023, he moved to Coventry on August 17 for a reported fee of about £9 million on a contract running to 2031.

Before Forest, the former Liverpool youngster built his reputation in Germany, notably at Union Berlin, where he scored 20 goals in all competitions in the 2021-22 season. He was also part of Nigeria’s 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning squad.

Other Nigerians in Action

Coventry midfielder Frank Onyeka was not included in the matchday squad. Elsewhere, Ola Aina featured as Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Brentford, while Semi Ajayi helped Hull City to a 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town, Complete Sports reported.

In the day’s big upset, leaders Manchester City were beaten 1-0 at home by Brighton, with Yasin Ayari scoring in the 11th minute. City stay top on 21 points, with Brighton third on 19.

What Next?

Awoniyi will hope the goal unlocks a run of form that keeps Coventry clear of danger and puts him back in the conversation for the Super Eagles, for whom he has 10 caps and two goals. Nigeria face back-to-back AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Tanzania in November, and a striker in form in the Premier League would be a welcome option for the national team.
