The Super Eagles of Nigeria face two must-win matches against Tanzania next month as they fight to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alive.

After two rounds of qualifying in Group L, Nigeria sit second with three points, three behind group leaders Guinea-Bissau, according to Soccernet NG.

Group L Table

  • 1. Guinea-Bissau: 6 points (played 2, won 2, goal difference +5)
  • 2. Nigeria: 3 points (played 2, won 1, lost 1, goal difference -2)
  • 3. Madagascar: 1 point (goal difference -1)
  • 4. Tanzania: 1 point (goal difference -2)

Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Madagascar in Uyo on 25 September, but suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Guinea-Bissau just four days later, a result that left fans worried.

Why Every Point Counts

Tanzania are co-hosts of AFCON 2027, alongside Kenya and Uganda, and have already qualified automatically. That means only the best-placed of the other three teams in Group L will earn a ticket to the tournament.

This leaves Nigeria in a tense three-way battle with Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar for one spot. Anything less than two wins against Tanzania could leave the three-time African champions relying on other results.

Back-to-Back Tanzania Fixtures in November

The Super Eagles will play Tanzania twice in mid-November, first at home in Uyo and then away in Dar es Salaam. Reports differ on the exact dates, with some listing 11 and 15 November and others 13 and 17 November. An official confirmation from the Nigeria Football Federation is expected soon.

Six points from those two matches would take Nigeria to nine points and put real pressure on Guinea-Bissau heading into the final rounds.

Osimhen Could Return

Head coach Eric Chelle, who also manages the Olympic Eagles, is reportedly considering changes to his squad. According to Legit.ng, star striker Victor Osimhen could return after recovering from a groin injury, which would be a major boost for a team that struggled for goals in Guinea-Bissau. No official squad list has been announced yet.

Pressure on Chelle

Missing out on AFCON would be a huge blow for Nigeria, one of Africa’s most successful football nations, and fans expect nothing less than qualification. Chelle and his players know the November double-header could define their campaign.
