EFCC Probes Kwara Gov’s Brother, 13 Others Over Misappropriation of Funds

AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into alleged corruption within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). Isiaka Abdulrazak, the younger brother of Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, is among the top names under scrutiny.

In a letter dated April 28, 2025, the EFCC asked the new NNPC Managing Director, Mr. Bayo Ojulari, to provide details of salaries and benefits paid to Isiaka and 13 others. The request marks a critical step in the agency’s effort to trace alleged misuse of public funds.

Growing Concerns About Political Influence

Critics have raised concerns over possible interference from Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, who also chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). Many worry that his influence could affect the outcome of the investigation. Their concerns grew after the appointment of Mr. Ojulari, who is also from Kwara State.

A youth leader within the APC, who claims to have been victimized by the Governor, warned that the state is being run like a family business. He alleged that transparency and accountability have vanished from the current administration.

“The Governor’s younger brother is under EFCC probe. Yet, state matters continue to revolve around the family,” he said. “When his immunity ends in 2027, he too will face serious questions.”

Tension Builds Among Kwarans

Many Kwarans fear the growing political dominance of the Abdulrazak family may tarnish the state’s image. Locals say the family’s national influence could invite more scrutiny and cast Kwara in a negative light compared to other Nigerian states.

Furthermore, observers believe this case will test the EFCC’s independence. If handled poorly, it could damage public trust in Nigeria’s anti-corruption institutions.
