A Florida mother has been arrested after deputies say she left her four children home alone for days while she went on a work trip to Las Vegas.
Irene Miller, 50, of Kissimmee, was taken into custody as she stepped off her flight at Orlando International Airport. She faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
A 911 Call Over a Falling Dumbbell
The case came to light on Wednesday, October 21, just after 8:30 p.m., when a child called 911 from the family’s home on Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee. She told dispatchers that her 9-year-old brother had been hurt after a dumbbell fell on his head.
When deputies arrived, they found four children, aged 9, 11, 12 and 14, at home with no adult present. Fire rescue crews took the 9-year-old to hospital in Celebration, where he was treated and later released.
Mother Was in Las Vegas
Deputies reached Miller by phone. She told them she was working in Las Vegas and planned to return on Friday, October 23. According to investigators, she had left for the trip on October 18, meaning the children were without a parent at home for about five days.
Miller told deputies she had arranged for a babysitter who travelled from Tampa each morning to get the children ready for school and who checked on them in the afternoons. However, the babysitter did not stay overnight, leaving the children alone every night.
Arrested as She Stepped Off the Plane
Detectives arranged to meet Miller when her flight landed in Orlando on Friday. Body camera footage released by the Sheriff’s Office shows her being taken into custody shortly after she got off the plane. She was booked into the Orange County Jail.
The children’s father was contacted, and he agreed to take all four children to his home.
“We Will Not Tolerate Child Neglect”
Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon made it clear that his office takes such cases seriously. “The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect,” he said, adding that charges “will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising” their children.
A Debate About Supervision
The case has sparked debate online. Some argue that older children can safely look after themselves for short periods, especially with a babysitter checking in during the day. Others say that leaving a 9-year-old and his siblings alone overnight for several nights is clearly unsafe, as the dumbbell accident showed.
Florida law does not set a specific minimum age at which children can be left home alone. However, parents can face neglect charges if they fail to provide the supervision needed to keep a child safe.
Miller has not publicly commented on the charges. As with anyone charged with a crime, she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
