Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored twice as Galatasaray beat bitter rivals Fenerbahçe 2-1 at RAMS Park on Monday night, but the result was overshadowed by ugly scenes after the final whistle as players from both sides clashed in a mass brawl.
Video of the fight, widely shared on social media, shows players, coaching staff, security and police crowding the pitch as tempers boiled over at the end of the Intercontinental Derby, one of the fiercest rivalries in world football.
Brawl After the Final Whistle
According to reports, the trouble began with an exchange between Fenerbahçe forward Kerem Aktürkoğlu and Galatasaray’s Roland Sallai, and quickly spread as players rushed in from both sides. Security staff and police had to step in to separate them.
Galatasaray captain Abdülkerim Bardakcı and Fenerbahçe defender Archie Brown were involved in a physical confrontation and were both shown red cards after the final whistle. The pair will now face suspensions, and the Turkish Football Federation could take further disciplinary action once it reviews the footage.
The tension had been building all night. Within seconds of kick-off, Bardakcı and Romelu Lukaku clashed, and players from both teams had to get between them.
Osimhen Does the Damage
On the pitch, it was another big night for Osimhen. Fenerbahçe hit the post in the 26th minute, and three minutes later Galatasaray went ahead. Osimhen exchanged passes with Barış Alper Yılmaz before curling the ball into the top corner.
He doubled the lead in the 44th minute, heading home after Davinson Sánchez flicked on a long throw-in from İsmail Jakobs.
Fenerbahçe pulled one back in the 62nd minute through a superb overhead kick from İrfan Can Kahveci, set up by Oğuz Aydın. The visitors pushed for an equaliser, and Milan Škriniar went close with a header in the 90th minute, but Galatasaray held on. Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson made several important saves to keep the score down, while Rafael Leão nearly added a third for Galatasaray late on.
What the Win Means
The victory lifts Galatasaray to 22 points from nine games, six points clear at the top of the Süper Lig. Fenerbahçe stay on 16 points. Okan Buruk’s side also extended their unbeaten home league run at RAMS Park to 40 matches.
For Osimhen, the brace takes him to eight league goals this season. Nigerian fans will be delighted to see the Super Eagles’ main striker in such form, with the national team preparing for its Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Tanzania.
A Derby With a History of Flashpoints
Galatasaray against Fenerbahçe is known as the Intercontinental Derby because the two clubs come from opposite sides of the Bosphorus, Galatasaray from the European side of Istanbul and Fenerbahçe from the Asian side. The fixture has a long history of red cards, fights and crowd trouble, and Monday’s scenes will add to calls for stronger action against players who lose control.
Galatasaray next face Konyaspor in the league. Both clubs could be without key players depending on what action the authorities take over the brawl.
