Nigerians have taken to the streets in major cities nationwide to protest against economic hardship, despite last-minute efforts by the government to prevent the demonstrations.

Inflation has soared to 34 percent, largely due to the removal of subsidies and the floating of the naira, driving the cost of basic necessities beyond the reach of millions.

The protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, gained significant traction on social media, with young Nigerians leading discussions on various digital platforms.

Authorities attempted to halt the protests, warning that they might be hijacked by criminals. While acknowledging the nation’s challenges, they urged organizers to postpone the protests to give the government more time to address the issues.

However, the Take It Back Movement, a key organizer, remained resolute in continuing the rallies. Protesters are demanding the restoration of petrol subsidies, a stable forex regime, solutions for food shortages, reduced unemployment, and an end to wasteful government spending. Additionally, they call for immediate reforms of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with a renewed focus on combating political corruption.
