New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has gone viral after an unexpected greeting from one of the city’s most charming residents: Pickles the seal.
The mayor was visiting the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn, to mark a $2 million city investment in renovating the aquarium’s Sea Cliffs exhibit. As he sat beside the seal’s enclosure smiling for cameras, Pickles leaned over and planted a big kiss on his cheek, leaving Mamdani laughing.
The clip has since been viewed millions of times, with one post by Brut America alone drawing more than 800,000 likes.
“A Pretty Clear Seal of Approval”
Mamdani shared the moment on his official X account, joking that the investment had “gotten a pretty clear seal of approval.” He thanked his hosts and Pickles for having him.
According to reports, City Council member Kayla Santosuosso joined the mayor for the visit.
What the $2 Million Will Do
The money will go towards renovating Sea Cliffs, one of the aquarium’s most popular outdoor exhibits. Designed to look like a rocky Pacific coastline, it is home to rescued sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and penguins. Many of the animals came to the aquarium after being stranded, injured or orphaned in the wild and could not be safely returned to the ocean.
The renovation is expected to improve the animals’ habitats and the visitor experience. City investment in cultural institutions like the aquarium is also seen as a boost for Coney Island, which relies heavily on tourism.
Why Rescue Exhibits Matter
Aquariums like New York’s play an important role in marine animal rescue. Seals, sea lions and otters that are found stranded, sick or injured along the coast are often taken in and cared for. Those that recover are released back into the wild, while animals that cannot survive on their own may find a permanent home in exhibits like Sea Cliffs. Supporters say such exhibits also teach children about ocean conservation, pollution and the threats facing marine life.
About the New York Aquarium
The New York Aquarium is the oldest continuously operating aquarium in the United States, first opening in 1896. It moved to its current home on the Coney Island boardwalk in 1957 and is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, which also operates the Bronx Zoo.
The aquarium was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when floodwaters swept through the site. It has since been rebuilt and expanded, and today welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, including many school groups from across the city.
A Mayor Who Knows How to Go Viral
Mamdani, who took office as mayor in January 2026, built much of his campaign on social media, using short, playful videos to connect with young voters. Moments like this one have helped him keep that connection while in office.
The mayor also has a strong link to Africa. He was born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian-born filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, before moving to New York as a child. His rise to become the city’s first Muslim mayor has drawn attention across Africa and the diaspora.
Social Media Reacts
Users online have had plenty of fun with the clip. Many joked that Pickles had “endorsed” the mayor, while others praised the investment in animal rescue and conservation. Some said it was the most wholesome political moment they had seen all year.
For Pickles, it was just another day at work, but for the mayor, it was probably the warmest thank-you he has received since taking office.
